To flourish requires a new kind of openness. More than 150 years ago, Charles Darwin foreshadowed this era in his description of natural selection: “It is not the strongest of the species that survives; nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.

In 2012, Robert Safian wrote an article in Fast Company about Generation Flux. It profiled leaders in business who were taking the reigns of a changing business environment (one that Safian called “pure chaos”), by leveraging the disruption new technology and globalization continues to cause. Previously a practice that somewhat intimidated me --after all, I was more of a creative than a businessperson, it was the first time I realized that business made sense to me.

This environment of “chaos” is right where I feel comfortable. To me, new digital platforms and technologies, constant communication between potential customers (also known as “people”...), and the inevitable anxiety that comes with not having a plan to keep up with it all while still running your day to day business… all that to me is not chaos. It’s the biggest opportunity yet to take your business and launch it to the next level. Maybe it takes a reorganization of traditionally accepted norms of how your business operates, and sure, that can be costly and frightening if you've reached success by doing things a certain way, but I'm willing to bet you may have been rejecting some of these norms for quite some time now. You're not alone. 

On some level, we might realize these “traditional” ways may not be working as effectively on their own anymore, if it all. We know we want to reach our customers and we know there are ways of effectively doing so. We might even also know that to do all this well, we may have to take a long hard look at ourselves, where we’re spending the most of our time, what it is that we stand for and the products and services we provide.
